What is SGPT & SGOT?

The SGPT & SGOT test measures the levels of two important liver enzymes: serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) and serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) in the blood. These tests are commonly done to assess liver function, diagnose liver disorders, and monitor liver health.

SGOT, also known as AST or Aspartate Aminotransferase, and SGPT, or ALT or Alanine Aminotransferase, are two enzymes predominantly found in the liver that play key roles in amino acid metabolism. Both enzymes are crucial for various metabolic processes, including the synthesis and breakdown of proteins. These enzymes are released into the bloodstream when liver cells are injured or destroyed.

Doctors may advise the SGOT and SGPT test when an individual exhibits symptoms suggestive of liver dysfunction, including jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), abdominal pain, dark urine, pale stool, fatigue, and unexplained weight loss. These tests are also done as a part of a standard liver function test (LFT), especially in individuals with risk factors such as excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, diabetes, or a history of liver disease. Additionally, these tests can be used to assess the effectiveness of treatments for liver-related conditions.

No special preparation is required before undergoing SGOT and SGPT tests. However, following your doctor’s instructions and informing them of any medications or supplements you are taking is advisable, as these can impact test results.

Lab test results may vary across laboratories. Abnormal test results require expert interpretation; therefore, do not self-medicate at home solely based on these results, and consult your doctor for a proper understanding of the test results. Based on the results, your doctor will assess your medical condition, suggest lifestyle changes like diet and exercise, and decide if medication is needed to manage your condition.

What is SGPT & SGOT used for?

The SGPT & SGOT test is done:

  • To assess liver function and identify potential liver damage or inflammation.
  • To assess symptoms such as jaundice, abdominal pain, or changes in the color of urine and stool that may indicate potential liver problems.
  • To help diagnose liver conditions such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or fatty liver disease.
  • To screen for liver diseases, especially if you have risk factors such as excessive alcohol use, obesity, or a family history of liver disorders.
  • To monitor liver function in patients undergoing treatments that might affect the liver.

What does SGPT & SGOT measure?

Contains 2 tests

The SGPT & SGOT test measures the levels of two key liver enzymes in the blood: SGOT (serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase) and SGPT (serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase). These enzymes are produced in the liver and are essential for metabolic processes involving amino acids. Elevated levels of SGOT and SGPT can indicate liver damage or inflammation, providing valuable information for diagnosing liver conditions and monitoring liver health. By assessing these enzyme levels, doctors can gain insights into liver function and guide appropriate treatment or management strategies.

Answers to Patient Concerns & Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about SGPT & SGOT

Frequently Asked Questions about SGPT & SGOT

Q. What do SGOT and SGPT stand for?

SGOT stands for Serum Glutamate-Oxaloacetate Transaminase, while SGPT stands for Serum Glutamate-Pyruvate Transaminase. Both are enzymes primarily found in the liver.

Q. Why are SGOT and SGPT tests performed?

These tests evaluate liver function, diagnose liver conditions such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, and fatty liver disease, and monitor the effectiveness of treatments for liver disorders.
